Major Events Between 1770 and 1774

  • The Boston Massacre

    Colonists took to the streets to protest and rebel against all of the unjust acts that were being imposed on them without any of their say in it. On March 5, 1770, they were confronted by British soldiers who opened fire upon them killing five of the colonists. This event was heavily published throughout the colonies.
  • Townshend Acts Cut Back

    Because of the reduced profits resulting from the colonial boycott of imported British goods, Parliament withdrew all of the Townshend Act taxes except for the tax on tea.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The East India Company was having dire money troubles and turned to the British Parliament for help. In response to this, they were given a monopoly over the import of all tea that wen to the colonies. The colonial tea traders were outraged by this and joined radical independence groups to rebel against Britain. On December 16, 1773, a band of men disguised as Mohawk Indians boarded British ships and dumped all of their tea cargo into the water.
  • The First Continental Congress

    Twelve out of the thirteen colonies sent out a total of 56 representatives to the very first continental congress. During this Congress, the colonies agreed to enforce a ban in the use of British goods until they repeal the taxes placed on them.
