    Mahatma Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India. His parents were Karamchand Gandhi, prime minister of the city, and mother Putlibai Gandhi was one of the greatest influences in his life, as she taught him the advantages of vegetarianism, respect for others and tolerance towards different ways of thinking and other religions from the rest of the world.

    At the age of eighteen (1887) he moved to London to study law, upon graduating he went to Bombay, where he wanted to work as a lawyer, but the little success of that profession and his lack of experience, made him unable to practice. In 1899 he was hired by an Indian firm as legal adviser in South Africa, where he lived for twenty years.

    He served as an orderly in the army, where after witnessing the horrors and violence of war, he decided to start his campaign for nonviolence and pacifism. During his campaign he was arrested several times, although he was quickly released. In South Africa, he organized an ambulance corps, led a section of the Red Cross and founded some cooperatives for the defense of the rights of Indians, and then returned to India.

    Later the British Empire regained some control over India, and this prompted Gandhi to organize several strikes for which he was arrested.

    He led a humble life: he did not accept land, he dressed like the lower classes and he was a vegetarian. He never indulged in luxuries or bad habits despite the fact that his fame grew day after day.
