    Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869. He was born and raised in a Hindu merchant caste family in coastal Gujarat, India.

    In May 1883, Gandhi was only 13 years old when he was married to 14-year-old Kasturbai Makhanji Kapadia. This was an arranged marriage, according to the customs of his region. While he was married, he lost a year at school, but was later allowed make up his studies.
