  • Birth and childhood

    Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in the coastal town of Porbandar His father, Karamchand Gandhi, was the prime minister of Porbandar and belonged to the Banias caste. His mother, named Putlibai.Gandhi was a quiet, withdrawn and not very bright child in his studies, who passed by without drawing attention to the schools of Rajkot.
  • Early wedding

    At the age of thirteen, following the Hindu custom, he was married to a girl of his age named Kasturbai, with whom he was engaged from the age of six without knowing it. The young husband fell passionately in love with the girl
  • University

    Hardly the entrance exam of the University of Mumbai, enrolling in the Samaldas School in Bhavnagar. He did not spend much time there, because he took the opportunity to study in England, where he studied law at University College, London.
  • New Work

    On his return to India6 he found it difficult to find work, acwpto a 1-year contract to work in a Hindu company Natal, South Africa. Lived 21 years in that country and dedicated his life to protest against racial segregation
  • Beginning as a Protestant

    Arriving in the African country, Mohandas faced a racist and violent system. Blacks, Indians and Muslims were discriminated against in every way possible by the British and Dutch, at that time rulers of several South African states. It was for him an awakening of social consciousness that culminated in the creation of a social and political organization led by him
  • The Satyagraha technique

    After getting politically involved for the rights of Hindus in South Africa, the young Gandhi decided to move there with his wife and children. It began to attract notoriety from the press and government officials, who wanted to stop their struggle. It was during the Second Boer War that Gandhi developed the Satyagraha technique , which he valued for the struggle for rights without the use of violence, based solely on civil disobedience and words
  • A popular leader

    After 20 years of fighting for indigenous rights in South Africa, being arrested several times, and finally getting the repeal of the law that discriminated against his people (called "black act"), Gandhi, now 45, decided to return to India.
  • Salt march

    Gandhi had been fighting for India’s independence from the British exploratory government for 15 years. General strikes, boycotts and pacifist acts led or inspired by his figure spread throughout the country, gaining rights and weakening colonial rule.
    It was then that Gandhi had the idea to march 200 kilometers to protest against such abuse.
  • Assassinated

    There were those who accused Gandhi of weakening the power of the Hindus with his protests for peace and unity. The first attempt on his life took place on 20 January 1948 with a bomb thrown at him, but no one was injured. Ten days later, however, he was shot dead by a radical Hindu named Nathuram Godse.
