    She started as a teacher but then turned her attention to helping other educators incorporate literacy in the classroom. She then created her own curriculum called "Units of Study".
  • National Literacy Act of 1990

    This act established an Interagency Task Force on Literacy. This act requires EPA to provide national leadership which in result increases environmental literacy. EPA established the Office of Environmental Education to apply this program.
  • Literacy program

    Literacy programs talks about creating a literacy rich environment for young students. This would include providing books, having adult to child conversations, and getting involved in read aloud story times.
  • Tactile Literacy

    Old tactics where students are expected to sit still and learn all day are becoming not as effective. Now using tactile literacy students are getting up and learning with hands on activities.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

    This law ensures that all students get the same level of education. Students in disadvantage areas are given the same opportunities and resources to succeed into future education.

    Richard Allington
    Richard Allington was a past-president of the International Reading Association and the Literacy Research Association. He is now a professor of literacy studies at the University of Tennessee. He was given an award for his study regarding summer reading loss in student.
