Brain development begins
3 weeks into pregnancy, rapid multiplying cells form the neural plate and eventually this folds in to itself and becomes the neural tube. -
Neurons begin to form
Around 5 weeks into pregnancy, neurons begin to form, divide, and multiply in the babies brain. -
Most active neuron time
In the middle of the second trimester, 250,000 neurons are created every minute. Neurons begin traveling to different places in the baby's brain and begin to take on roles. Some of the roles include, sound, storing memories, and forming connections with other neurons. -
Cerebral Cortex
By the 7th month the cerebral cortex holds 70% of the baby's neurons. -
Other brain regions begin to function
By the 8th month of pregnancy, the auditory cortex, the visual cortex, and Broca’s area begin to function. These areas help the baby to interpret sights and sounds and to distinguish language. -
