    Mohandas Gandhi is born into a middle class Hindu family.He was born in Porbandar. Porbandar is a coastal town part of the Bombay Presidency, British India.

    Gandhi marries to Kasturba Kapedia. She was the only daughter born to wealthy parents.They were both thirteen when they were married.
  • Studying Law

    Ghandi goes to England to study law at the age of 19. He attends the University College London. After three years of education he returned to India.

    Ghandi travels to South Africa to practice law. He finds the Natal Indian Congress.

    The Boer Republic Transvaal attempts to register all Indians as members. Gandhi and others refuse to register. Their resistance marks the first use of nonviolent non-cooperation with the British. This resistance develops the name satyagraha, or "truth-force."

    Gandhi began a campaign called civil disobedience for nonviolent resistance against British rule. He supported strikes and protests along with the boycotting of British goods.

    Gandhi led the Salt March which was a 241 mile march to the coast. Many followed Gandi in this protest of the salt tax. The British didn't allow Indians to make salt so that they were forced to buy heavily taxed salt from the British.

    In addition to Civil Disobedience, Gandhi and the India National Congress decided to adopt a policy of non-cooperation with Britain. Muslims did not support this movement and British responded with more arrests.

    Gandhi's wife, Kasturba Makhanji-Gandhi dies from the effects of two heart attacks at the age of 74.

    The British starts to realize that they could no longer keep India. Popular opinion in British opposed keeping the colonies.

    There was rioting going on between Muslims and Hindus. Gandhi wanted to keep India together and hoped Muslims and Hindus could work together. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the Muslim leader feared that Muslim rights wouldn't be respected in a Hindu country.

    This act ended British rule and seperated the Indian subcontinent. India became Hindu and Pakistan became Muslim. The seperation caused much violence and migration. Gandi refused to celebrate independence.

    Gandhi gets assassinated by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu extremist. He was on his way Pakistan to visit Jinnah when he was shot. Godse believed that Gandi betrayed his own people.
