In antiquity, the Singaporean region had one main ethnicity, a main language, and some religious beliefs.
The main ethnicity were *Orang Seletars. The main language was *austronesian. The *indigenous people believed in *ilmu (magic). They had to pray to *spirits to get the *ilmu, and they paid *spirits with *pengeras (offerings), which were plums, salt, and a needle. -

Muslims came to Singaporean Region
In the *15th century (1400-1500), *Muslims (followers of *Islam), came to the Singaporean region, affecting the religion. The *Muslims came from India and to the Singaporean region. The *Muslims coming to the region impacted Singapore because the *Muslims introduced *Islam. When *Islam was introduced, it was quickly accepted by the people of the Singaporean region. -

The Chinese traded with Singaporean Region
Chinese traders that traded with the Singaporean region in *The Precolonial Era (1450-1620) impacted the languages of the region. The traders, going through the South China Sea, brought the Singaporean region many different materials such as *silk, *damasks (fabric with patterns), *porcelain (china) and *pottery (crafts made of clay). The Chinese brought *Mandarin (form of Chinese) to the Singaporean region as they traded with them. -
Sir Stamford Raffles Came
The languages in Singapore were affected when in 1819 Sir Stamford Raffles came and created a base for the British East India Company. Quickly afterwards, Singapore joined the Malayan states of Penang and Malacca, creating the *Straits Settlements. This later came under the control of the British. The British brought the English language to Singapore. -
TODAY
Today, there are three major ethnicities in Singapore, four official languages, and many different religions, but no official religion. Most locals are Chinese, *Malay (from Malaysia), or Indian. Official languages are Malay, Chinese (*Mandarin (form of Chinese)), Tamil, and English. Most of the population’s ethnicity matches their religion. The Chinese are mostly *Buddhist or *Daoist, Indians are mostly *Hindu, and *Malays are *Muslim (follower of Islam).
