Laws that affect special needs

  • 1. Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.

    This law was passed under President Johnson and it sent federal dollar to elementary and secondary schools to improve the academic achievement of special education/children with disabilities.
  • Board of Education of Hendrick Hudson Central School District v. Rowley - 458 U.S. 176 (1982)

    The supreme court deemed it necessary for all public schools to be able to provide a translator for deaf students.

    This law was passed under president Ford in 1986, It focused on the preschool and elementary education for special education as well as education accessibility for children with disabilities.

    This Law was put into place under President Clinton and included the following Identifying children with special needs before they enter school and providing services to help them, Developing individualized education programs (IEPs) that focus on improving educational results through the general curriculum, Educating children with disabilities with their nondisabled peers, Setting higher expectations for students who are disabled and ensuring schools are held accountable, .
  • Cedar Rapids v. Garret F., 526 U.S. 66

    The court affirmed the judgment that petitioner school district was financially responsible under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to provide continuous one-on-one nursing services for respondent student. The student needed to use a ventilator at all times which meant during school as well.
