    Toussaint L'Ouverture (former black slave owner) Started the revolution with 100,000 slaves in 1791. He wanted to revolt and gain Independence from France.

However, the French later accused Toussaint of planning another uprising and imprisoned him. On January 1st 1804, General Dessalines declared the colony an independent country. Haiti became the first black colony to free itself from European control.
