    Pre-natal development

    During this period, a fetus can still hear the outside world, and while the sounds are not clear, they are able to distinguish their mother's voice.

    Cooing and Babbling

    This is when the infant begins to make sounds and noises that sound like familiar words to us. This begins around 2 months of age.

    Receptive Language Develops

    Around 6 or 7 months of age, infants start to understand some common words.

    First Real Words

    Around 12 months of age, the baby will say it's first word.

    Increase Vocabularly

    By 18 months, the infant is increasing their vocabulary by 1-3 words a week. They typically know about 250 words at the end of this stage. They are also beginning to string 2 words together.

    Speech is much clearer

    Around 3-4 years of age, most people can understand the child.

    Gains more knowledge about how language works

    Around age 6, children enter school and begin to learn how sounds go together, and words are formed. They begin to understand more then just the meaning of the word, but also how the word is formed.

    Adult conversation

    By age 8, most children can have a conversation that mimics that of an adult.
