Brown vs Board of Education
In the 1950's the idea of separate but equal were still swirling around causing unbelievable problems. When Brown vs Board of Education went to the supreme court, racism and segregation were two of the biggest problems in the U.S. The final verdict was schools, buses, and any public place was to be equal for everyone. The reason I chose this as my starting point for my timeline was that it was the first time things were viewed as equal. Our country as a whole still had a long way to go. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act (Public Law 94-142)
In 1975 President Ford put PL 94-142 into place stating, that if a state received money from the federal government that it must be used to provide equal access and resources for children with disabilities. It also states that students should receive free and equal public education. The reason I chose this to add to my timeline is that children with disabilities finally got equal rights. They got to experience what the other kids did without fear of being excluded. -
PL 101-476 called for changes to PL 94-142
Starting a new year called for some changes to PL 94-142, autism and traumatic brain injuries were considered new disability categories to the act. Congress also stated an IEP or ITP should be in place to help students transition, most parents played a major role in this because they knew what their child truly needed to continue on in life. My reason for choosing this was every student is different, we can only help them prepare for life even if it is through how we teach or an IEP they have. -
Congress amends IDEA -Individual with Disabilities Education Act
This change called for early intervention for infants, toddlers, and children with disabilities. Children up to the age of 2 receive services from Part C of IDEA and children 3 to 21 receive services from Part B of IDEA. It states the teachers have raised standards and educational outcomes for their students.
Choosing this as my final piece is important because it shows how much we have expanded our ways of thinking and how we can treat everyone with equal respect and opportunities.
