    sourceFranz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary is assasinated by a Russian. Austria-Hungry, with Germany, declare war on Russia. They call themselves the Central Powers. France, Great Britain, Russia and America, respond calling themselves the Ally Powers.

    Soliders dug lines of muddy trenches to avoid enemy fire. Soliders had to go over the top to attack the enemies. Trenches were often taken down by machine guns. These advances made the war deadlier and to end the war their was the Treaty of Versailles, which made Germany and Austria-Hungry accept harsh punishments. source

    Tsars have ruled Russia for a long time. During the early 1900s, the russians grow upset with their government. The troubles of war add to their anger. A rebelion occurs, led by Vladmir Lenon. The revolution occurs and Nicholas is forced to step down. Lenon takes over from there. source

    sourceCommunism was a system in which government controls most businesses. Communists promised that everyone would get an equal share of the country's wealth. Communism seemed fair but it turn out to be totally unfair. Communists used the country's wealth to support its own power. After Lenin died Joseph Stalin took power and and ruled Russia ruthlessly. He set up prison camps, and punished anyone who challanged his rule. Stalin probably killed 10 million of his own people.

    The US is richer than any other country had ever been. Americans used their wealth to buy many things, and showed off their wealth with beautiful objects. Jazz music flourishes, as do many other arts.

More than a million people became homless. Every country suffered from the Great Depression until countries began to increase the production rate of goods. He also tried to reform the financial system to repeat another Depression. The new deal also produced new political realignment.

    While the war was being fought in Europe, the US had mostly stayed out of the war. Except, when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, America responded by joining the Ally Powers. The Ally powers had France, United Kingdom, Russia and now America, too. The Americans later developed an atomic bomb which they revenge with.source

    sourceThe US is capitalist, but the Soviets are communists and controlled property and business. In capitalsim, the people control the property and business. The Soviets took over eastern European countries and forced them to become communists. They threatened to launch atomic bombs on each other. Most of the countries in the world became either communist or capitalist and the tension increased between countries.

    sourceDuring the Cold War, North Korea invaded South Korea to start the Korean war. The democratic countries sent troops to support South Korea, where as only communist China helped North Korea.

    source In Asia, the northern part of Vietnam were communists, and the southern part wasn't. The United States sent troops to help the South Vietnam and to fight the communism. Tons of people died, and despite the troops we gave them, South Vietnam lost, and the whole country became communists.
