The Battle of Hastings
The Battle of Hastings was fought between the Norman knights and English infantry. This was the earliest record of knights riding on horseback. -

The knights wore
-Cone-shaped helmets with a protective nose strip
-Long chain mail suits with sleeves, which were made of thousands of matal rings. The suits were called a hauberk
-They had large kite-shaped shields
-Worea padded wollen tunic, called a gambeson -

-Helmets rounder, with wider nose band
-Loose-fitting surcoat worn over chain mail armour to protect from sun's heat
-Coat of arms identifies the knight
-Hauberk covers neck and attached to helmet with leather strips
-Heuberk includes chain mail mittens
-Shield smaller and more triangular
-Chain mail leggings cover feet -

-Bascinet helmets worn, visors can be lifted
-Hammered iron added for protection
-The weight of chain mail and plate armour was so great that if the knight fell over he couldn't get up on his own
-Shield is smaller and curved for added protection
-Iron gloves are worn, called gauntlets
-Hauberk is stronger
-Padded stockings with iron braces are worn -

-Whole suit of armour weighs around 25kg, but more flexible than chain armour
-Lighter helmets worn, called barbutes
