Just eight months after he was born, James' father; Lord Darnley, was found murdered. Months later the Queen (his mother) fled Scotland leaving a 13 month old baby in charge of a country.
The old Queen was later executed in England because of plotting against Queen Elizabeth in 1587. http://www.britroyals.com/stuart.asp?id=james1 -
