closest to nuclear war ever during the cold war. JFK not running off of brinkmanship led to the deflation of tensions and not reacting immediately so violently. -

major political win for the civil rights movement since it made voting takes, and tests illegal. this encouraged many african americans to begin voting -

completely changed public opinion over the war in vietnam. now become more of a moral issue as well as a issue of not feeling safe or given the truth from the government. -

riots against the brutality of police against gays in a openly gay community in NYC. was a major moment in the LGBT movement as it was the first time this minority decided to fight back. -
woodstock

kent state massacre
the protest against the invasion of cambodia on a campus ended in death. this only rallied the free speech movement and anti war sentiment. -
26th amendment
lowered the voting age to 18 since thats when men could go off to war. the pressure to pass this amendment reflects the heightened discontent with the government system as well as the war. -
SALT 1 treaty
between the US (nixon) and USSR (brehznev) and limited how much nuclear power each could have. was successful in deflating nuclear tensions and beginning to end the cold war. -
watergate break ins
leds to a scandal under nixon where he had involvement in the break in and cover up. this eventually led to his resignation ( to avoid impeachment) and even more distrust with inner washington. -

ruled for equal opportunities in education for boys in girls. major win for the feminist movement. -
vietnam peace settlement
finally america " got the hell out of dodge" and left Vietnam. this led to Vietnamization of the arm in Vietnam. -
end of key period
this marks the end of this period since in the 80s we see a major shift in economics as well as social life because of environmental and other political factors.
