  • World's First Special Education School

    World's First Special Education School
    The first public school to ever open doors to children with disabilities was the AInstitut National de Jeunes Sourds de Paris, or National Institute for Deaf Children of Paris. The school was established by priest Abbe De L'Epee, known as the "father of the deaf". This school placed the stepping stones for many others to come after.

    America's First Special Education School
    The first special education school in the United States is the American School for the Deaf, originally named the American Asylum for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb. It was founded by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet in Hartford, Connecticut. The school was greatly influenced by the National Institute for Deaf Children of Paris.

    This organization was created by a group of educators attending the summer session at Teachers College, Columbia University, and their faculty members. Elizabeth E. Farrell was the Founder and first President. The Council began with 12 members, today it is the most popular and largest professional organization in special education.   • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    This was the first special education law regarding students with physical and mental disabilities. The law stated that public schools must provide children with special needs with the same opportunities for education as other children. This law had a great, influential impact on millions of children with disabilities all around the states.
  • Handicapped Children’s Protection Act

    Handicapped Children’s Protection Act
    This act authorizes awards regarding attorney fees, expenses, and costs to the parents/guardians of handicapped children who is the prevailing party in a civil suit under such Act to protect the child's right to a free appropriate public education. The act also states that if parents deem their child’s IEP unsuitable, they have the right to a mediation process run by the State Education Department and to bring their case to state and/or federal court.

    The International Association for Special Education is a non-profit organization for SPED professionals working towards meeting the needs of children with disabilities worldwide. IASE connects teachers with research through the publication of an annual journal and a biannual conference, held in a different country each time.   • The Case of Timothy v. Rochester

    The Case of Timothy v. Rochester
    The U.S. Court of Appeals ruling, with Timothy v. Rochester School District, established that all school districts have the responsibility for educating every child, including those with disabilities. The IDEA's principle, Zero Reject, originated from this landmark case. Zero reject states that no child can be denied an education because they are "uneducable", they have the right to an education regardless the severity of their disability.

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, also known as IDEA, is a modification of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act signed by President Gerald Ford. This law ensures that special needs students have access to an appropriate free public education in the least restrictive environment necessary to meet those student's needs. The law helps students get the assistance they need while allowing them to engage in the same activities as children with no special needs.
