WORLD WAR ONE-THE CAUSE AND THE SPARK
One thing that caused World War One was nationalism. There was a lot of tension between countries navies and armies. The spark was France Ferdinand was assassinated.

Overthrowing Tsar Nicholas
Tsars ruled Russia for hundreds of years and they were absolute rulers. In early 1900's Russians grew unhappy with their goverment and the hardships of ther war. In 1917 a revolution forced Nicholas II to give up his throne.

TRENCH WARFARE
The Trench Warfare was when they would build trenches to protect themselves from the fast bullets of machine guns. The trenches were used to hide in during the war. By the wars end each side dug atleast 12,000 miles worth of trenches. On the German trench was much different. They constructed sophisticated tunnel trenches.

TREATY OF VERSAILLES
The treaty of Versailles ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied powers in 1918. It was for World War 1. The Centeral powers surrendered and were punsished with hard punishments.

THE RISE OF COMMUNISM
The governament had lots of control over you. The communists imposed this system after winning a civil war against anticommunsits in 1920. They promised everyone an equal share of everyone's wealth. Communism was brutally unfair. Lenin was for the communist party. Government controls most buisnesses.

JOSEPH STALIN
He was one of the greatest villans of the 20's. He was a dictator. He set up brutal prison camps. He punished anyone who challenged his rule. Salin was probably responsable for more than 10 million deaths of his own people.

The Roaring Twenties
Middle and late twenties was a time of prosperity in America and other countries. The economy grew very rapidly and America was richer then any other country had ever been. People used their great wealth to buy many new things like cars, dresses and appliances. New art forms flourished such as jazz music. The roaring twenties name came from the fast pace life.

THE GREAT DEPRESSION
The Great Depression is when the stock markets crashed in 1929. The economy went from boom to bust. The job economy was so low. Many people couldn't find jobs. They had no money. More than a million people became homeless. Almost every country suffered from the economic downturn . Because of the Great Depression, America is in a lot of debt.

America During the Depression
America during the Depression was a very hard life to live. After being very wealthy they lived in Hoovervilles, which are houses made out of garbadge. Men ate at soup kitchens because they gave their meals up to their family. It was very hard to find work, so many were jobless and homless. This all happened becuase the stock market collapsed.

HOOVERVILLES
Hoovervilles were places where homeless people could go to stay. They were not very nice. They were little shacks.The city didn't approve of them because most of the hoovervilles were on private property. Hoovervilles are named after president Hoover.

ROOSEVELT'S NEW DEAL.
This invloved laws passed by congress as well as president's orders. During President Roosevelt's first term, the programs were focused on the three r's. Relief, recovery, reform. Releif for unemployed and poor. Recovery of the economy to go back to normal. Reform for financial system to prevent repeat depression.

World War Two- Nazi Germany
A wonderful speaker named Adolf Hitler lead an orgination called the "Nazi Party." Him and the Nazis promised to make Germany great again. Hitler became dictator of Germany. Also Nazi Germany buit up their armed forces. Using threats and military forces Hitler took over land near Germany

Bombing of Pearl Harbor
Japan who was a part of the Axis Powers attacked America forces in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack drew the U.S. into the war. The U.S. took sides with the Allies. The war between the U.S. and Japan is called the Pacific war.

THE HOLOCAUST
The Nazis tried to destroy entire groups of people. (mostly Jews.) The Nazis sent people to rough concentration camps. In the camps, prisoners were simply worked to death, toutrered or killed.The Nazis killed about 6 million Jews during this time period.

The Cold War- Communism vs. Capitalism
The Cold War was the time period of tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was communist. Communist countries are countries that the goverment controls property and business. JAPENESE ATOMIC BOMBS
The atomic bomb was one of the most powerful weapons used. One bomb could destroy a whole city. U.S, dropped atomic bombs on Japanese cities. Over 100,000 people were killed. The Japanese surrendered Sep. 2, 1945.

North Korea
North Korea (communism) invades South Korea (non- communist) The U.S. sent troops to help south Korea. China supported North Korea. This was a hot war.

VEITNAM
Veitnam split into North (communist) and South Vietnam (non- communist). The U.S. sent troops over to help south vietnam and fight communsim in the vietnam war. Thousands of Americans and millions of Vietnemese died in the war. In 1975 North Vietnam defeted South Vietnam and the whole country became communist.

End of the Cold War
The Cold War ends with the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union. Communism ended when Eastern Europeans and Soviet citizens demanded reforms. It also ended because capitolism produced more wealth and communism couldn't compete. After the communist goverment fell the Soviet Union broke into several independant nations, the largest one being Russia.
