    The Declaration of Independence was the first formal written statement allowing the nation's people to chose their own government. The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4th but wasn't signed until August 2nd. This document allows us to have secured rights and states that every man is created equally.

    The Louisiana Purchase was a land deal between the United States and France. This purchase doubled the size of the United States and gave them the power of the Mississippi River.

    The California Gold Rush was when people went to California in search of gold. This caused many people to move to the west and search for gold and created job opportunities.

    The Great Depression 1929-1940
    The Great Depression was the worst economic plunge in history. This started when the stock market crashed in October of 1929. Over the next couple of years, consumer spending and investment dropped which then caused major decline in industrial output and employment. The reason this depression ended was the start of World War 2 which gave 17 million unemployed people jobs.

    Attack on Pearl Harbor
    The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack from Japan on the naval base, which is located near Honolulu, Hawaii. This attack took place right before 8 a.m. and included hundreds of Japenese fighter planes damaging and destroying 20 American naval vessels, 8 battleships, and over 300 airplanes. This attack caused America to join in on World War 2.

    September 11, 2001
    September 11, 2001, was the day that 19 Islamic terrorists hijacked 4 airplanes and flew two into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, one into the Pentagon in Washington DC, and one crash into Pennsylvania. This attack killed almost 3,000 people, including the Islamic terrorists, police, firefighters, and civilians. This attack caused the stock exchange trading to drop by 7.1 percent.

    Hurricane Katrina
    Hurricane Katrina was a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 100-140 miles per hour and stretched to around 400 miles. Katrina's aftermath affected states such as Mississippi and Alabama but had the biggest impact on New Orleans, Lousiana. The hurricane killed around 2,000 people and caused 90,000 square miles of damage. After Katrina Congress enforced major reformation in FEMA and government disaster response.
