  • Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality

    Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality
    This was Washington's way of staying out of the conflicts in Europe. However, Britain did not like that the U.S. was trading with France, so they started seizing ships and impressing sailors of the U.S.

    Impressment of American Sailors

    This was the time where Britain was capturing and essentially enslaving U.S. sailors because of the U.S. still trading with France. This would be a large factor towards the War of 1812, and a huge reason of why war was only declared on Britain and not France, as only Britain was seizing both U.S. ships and impressing their sailors.
  • Jay Treaty

    Jay Treaty
    The Jay Treaty basically said Britain would leave the Northwest Territory, and stop seizing American ships. Of course, neither of these ever fully happened, but it led France to start seizing American ships.
  • Washington's Farewell Address

    Washington's Farewell Address
    This was George Washington's final document from leaving office. In it he warned of siding with foreign nations, and that temporary alliances were only sometimes acceptable, but never to fully align with a nation.
  • Chesapeake-Leopard Affair

    Chesapeake-Leopard Affair
    An affair in which the British ship the HMS Leopard invaded the USS Chesapeake after they were denied the ability to search of deserters from the Royal Navy. The HMS Leopard fired upon the vessel. The captain of the USS Chesapeake did very little to fight back, which humiliated the Americans, and further showed the degradation in relations between Britain and the U.S.

    The Embargo Act was an attempt to starve Britain and France out of seizing their ships by stopping trade with both countries. This only starved the American Economy however, and Britain and France were unphased.
  • Tecumseh - Battle of Tippecanoe

    Tecumseh - Battle of Tippecanoe
    Tecumseh had created a coalition with many Natives, in which the Battle of Tippecanoe was the first big conflict from this Coalition. While it happened before the war on Britain was declared, it is now considered the first engagement of the War of 1812.

    Led by Henry Clay, (Man in the Picture), the War Hawks were a group of Congress members elected in 1810 who pushed for the war with Britain.

    This was initiated by Congress officially declaring war on Britain. This was mainly pushed by the War Hawks. France was also voted on a war with, but they only agreed on war with Britain.

    Tecumseh Death's - Battle of Thames
    This battle was a huge U.S. victory for many reasons. The biggest was the death of Tecumseh. He was shot in the head during the battle. His death would shatter the Native coalition, and essentially take them out of the war.

    Hartford Convention

    The Hartford Convention was a meeting of Federalist party members in the New England states. They were concerned about the power of the Republican party. These led to a series of amendments to the Constitution.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    Treaty of Ghent
    The Treaty of Ghent officially ended the war of 1812. The Americans and the British signed the treaty on December 24, 1814. This officially made Britain recognize the Northwest Territory and the Louisiana Purchase as the U.S' land.
  • Battle of New Orleans

    Battle of New Orleans
    This Battle was staged well before the Treaty of Ghent. The battle ended when the news of the Treaty of Ghent was heard. This lead to New Orleans being incorporated into the U.S.
