Mach Bands
In 1865 Ernst Mach published "On the effect of the spatial distribution of the light stimulus on the retina" which was the first in a series of articles on what we know today as Mach Bands. The bands both light and dark along the inner and outer edges of the gradients are optical illusions. Ernst Mach suffered cardiac arrest in 1898 and retired from the University of Vienna in 1901. He was then appointed to the upper chamber of the Austrian parliament.
