John Dewey was an American philosopher who found the philosophical movement known as pragmatism. Pragmatism is "an approach that assesses the truth of meaning of theories or beliefs in terms of the success of their practical application." -
Dewey's Education
Dewey attended the University of Vermont in 1879, receiving a doctorate from John Hopkins University. Dewey studies child psychology, in turn helped him develop a philosophy of education that changed democratic society. -
Experience and Nature
While attending Columbia University in NYC, Dewey created his most well known philosophical work called Experience and Nature. This book included aesthetics, politics, and religion. This book was an outline of Dewey's philosophy and his belief that democratic society including knowledgable and active inquirers was the most effective way in encouraging human interests. -
Philosophy of Nature
In Dewey's Philosophy of Nature he believed all things are subject to change. There is no still being and nature is always evolving. Britannica stated "Nor is experience purely subjective, because the human mind is itself part and parcel of nature." Humans life is made up of experiences, which are the outcome of interacting between one another. Dewey believed in order to cope with human life you must be subject to change, and the processes involved. -

Experience and education was a short book written by Dewey. Dewey believed in progressive education, the need to learn and progress by doing. He believed human beings learn through the hands on approach. All in all categorizing Dewey in the educational philosophy of pragmatism. Pragmatism is the belief that reality must be experienced. Dewey's philosophy on education was one of his break throughs in science, and is what he is remembered by. -
