Thid day was very important because it was the day my life began and that my parents got to hold their first child for the first time. -
Bush vs. Gore
The Supreme Court had to decide whether the recounting of ballots in Florida was constitutional or not, which decided the presidential election of 2000. This caused lasting controversy over the electoral college system and changed methods of voting in multiple states to electronic ballots. -
U.S. Navy Spy Plane Crash in China
A Chinese and an American plane crashed and were forced to land in China. The Chinese pilot was M.I.A. and presumed dead. The 24 member crew was detained in China for eleven days based on the fulfillment of their terms. China expected an apology from the U.S. pertaining to the accident and the U.S. plane landing on an island with out permission before they considered negotiations. This strained the already tense "relationship" between the two nations. -
9/11
On this day, Al Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes in a terrorist attck on the United States. In the aftermath of this day in which nearly three thousand people died, Congress gave President Bush authority to use any force or means necessary against any group or country that had any association with Al Qaeda, 9/11, or terrorism. This lead to war on Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran, and negotiations with North Korea over nuclear weapons. -
Space Shuttle Columbia Disintegration
NASA noticed that there was a failure in the left wing of the space shuttle. There was no response from the Columbia and around 9:00 A.M. it was confirmed that the Columbia disintegrated upon reentry. Some people blamed terrorists for the event, while others questioned NASA, bringing to light failures with the shuttle and there was a push to end the shuttle program. It was believed to have become more about politics than science and divided politicians over the issue. -
My sisters were born
This day was important because it was the day that my family grew and I got two new younger siblings. -
Hurricane Katrina
This event left many towns devastated around the U.S.. It caused many legal isuues and President George Bush was criticized by many for his lack of response to the destruction. -
My first day of kindergarten
This day was significant because I began learning all sorts of new things and got to meet new people. -
First female Speaker of the House
Nancy Pelosi set an exaple for many young women on equalty by gaining her position and being the first woman to do so. She came to be Speaker with a liberal position on controversial topics such as abortion, gay rights, international trade, and environmentalism. In 2008, she got a bill passed to bailout Wall Street despite the opposition of both of the major parties. She has shown women what they can do with a lot of determination and helped our government multiple times. -
Getting my dog.
When we got our new dog we all immediately fell in love with her. She was small and sweet and absolutely adorable. WE made room in our lives for her and we still have her now and she' an even bigger part of the family than before. -
Obamacare Passed
Obamacare has caused opposing arguements on its benefits and downsides since it was passed. People are advocating to keep the ACA the same, and others think that the issues would be resolved if Congress passed an amendment to the act, which the Republicans are unwilling to do. It has caused a lot of controversey in the U.S. and needs to be solved before the turmoil gets worse. -
Bin Laden killed
In April 2011, Obama approved a plan to kill Bin Laden. After that was successfully completed, he called it the "most significant achievement to date" in the campaign against Al Qaeda. -
My first day of junior high
On this day I left the only school I had known and got to meet all sorts of new people and learn new things. -
Nana passed away
On this day my grandmother who had been fighting cancer for ten months passed away. She was very important to me growing up and losing her changed my view on many things. -
My first colorguard competition
In March of this year I joined the junior colorguard at the junior high. We had practiced every week learning basics and beginning a show. This was our first competition against other units and it began my love for the activity. -
Partial government shutdown
Congress failed to pass the federal budget by the beginning of the fiscal year. Democrats and Republicans fought over whether or not to inculde the Affordable Care Act in the new budget which caused the partial shutdown for 16 days. Federal employees lost an estimated 2.5 billion dollars in pay overall throughout the shutdown. The National Park Service and Smithsonian lost a combined $11 million in revenue and the FDA had to put a stop to nearly 855 inspections. -
Pop-pop passed away
This day my grandfather who had been sick for the past month passed away. It had only been 13 months since we had lost my grandmother and losing my grandfather was a blow that hurt our whole family. -
First competition with the marching band
In the August before I began ninth grade, I had joined the colorguard with the Abington Marching Ghosts. I had met so many new people and loved our show so far in the season, and ompeting on the field at our very first competition was an amazing feeling. It cemented my love for the program and I knew that I wanted to do this until I graduated. -
Had my appendix removed
That morning I had woken up extremely sick only to find out later in the day at the emergency room that my appendix had burst. It was a scar thing to hear that I would have to be operated on and I was very nervous about what would happen. It put some things into perspective for me and I'm glad that everything was fine. -
Same-sex marriage legalized
As a result of this, all U.S. citizens who want to get married now fully have the right to do so. The spouses of federal employees receive health insurance and pension protection, widows and widowers get social security benefits, immigration protection, benefits for military spouses. People have made it clear that they don't support these changes but however the Supreme Court ruled the ban on same-sex marriages unconstitutional and required all states to legalize it.
