Early Life
Jamie Escalante was born in December 31, 1930. Jamie was a child of two teachers, Escalante became one of the most famous educator in America during the 1980s and the 1990s. -
Math Teacher
In 1974 Escalante took a job at Garfield High School in East Los Angles. Teaching math to trouble students in a rundown school known for violence and drugs. He started an advance mathematics program with a handful of students. -
Math Class
In 1982 his largest class of students took and passed an advanced placement test in calculus. Many of the students were disqualified because they were Hispanic and poor. Few months later they took the test again proving that they knew the material and that the district was wrong. -
Classroom successes
In 1988 Escalante's classroom challenges and successes were the topic of much public discussion. Escalante's story was the subject of a book entitled Jamie Escalante: The Best Teacher in America and a film called Stand and Deliver. -
Last Years
Escalante taught another high school in Sacramento. He retired in 1988 as a teacher. Escalante received many awards for his contributions to the field of education. Escalante died in 2010 after a long struggle with cancer.
