Ivan the Terrible was born on August 25, 1530 in Kolomenskoye, Moscow, Russia. His father was Vasili III of Russia and his mother was Elena Glinskaya. His father died when he was only 3 years old and his mother ruled as regent until her death in 1538 when Ivan was 8 years old.

Growing up in 1539, there was evidence that Ivan was a sensitive and intelligent boy who was neglected and often abused by members of the nobility who looked after him after his parents passed away. He began to hate on the boyar class for how he treated him and suspected they were involved in his mother's death.

Ivan the Terrible was the first Grand Prince to become Russia's Czar of Muscovy at the young age of 16 in 1547. Moscow became the capital of Russia when he was crowned Czar the same year.
