Robert Cecil's Memorandum
In September of 1916, British government member Robert Cecil formed a memorandum where he stated that civilization could survive only if it could develop an international system that would insure peace. This provoked quite a bit of thought on the subject. -
Peace Negotiations
Woodrow Wilson made sure that his Fourteen Points (a peace program) was used as a basis for the signing of the Armistice (the program). The League of Nations was formed in the process. -
Paris Peace Conference
The constitution of the League of Nations was adopted by the Paris Peace Conference at this point in time. The League's headquarters were stationed in Geneva. -
International Economic Instability
Countries abandoned the gold standard during the 1930s, leading to financial instability worldwide. The IMF (International Monetary Fund) was created later on to attempt to alleviate these problems. -
Red Army Invasion
Stalin ordered the Red Army to invade Finland on the 30th of November, 1939. This was after lots of conflict that had occured in this period of time between many countries - especially with the likes of Adolf Hitler. The League of Nations takes action and expels the Soviet Union from the League. -
Economic Plans
At a mountain resort in New Hampshire called Bretton Woods, financial reps from 44 allied nations thought up institutions to fight the problems that were affecting international economic growth that had resulted from the war. -
Birth of the United Nations
The United Nations came to extistence on the 24th of October, 1945, when the UN Charter had been ratified by a majority of the original 51 Member States. -
Official Establishment
In December of 1945, both the IMF and the World Bank were officially established. -
Movement and Disbanding
In 1946 the League of Nations handed its responsibilities to the United Nations. -
World Trade Organization
Formed as a legal successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), the WTO was established in 1947. -
The Korean War
The United Nations authorized the coalitions that fought in this war (this, including the Persian Gulf War later on). -
Cuban Missle Crisis
The U.N. was used as a podium by the United States during the Cuban Missle Crisis in 1962, opposing Russia's placement of nuclear missiles in Cuba. -
Nobel Prize
The United Nations Peace-Keeping Forces received the Nobel Prize for Peace. -
Persian Gulf War
The United Nations authorized the coalitions that fought in this war.
