    Japan’s invasion of China happened because of Japan's desire to be an imperial power. There was also an economic and militaristic element that was included in this desire. Japan wanted to be apart of the war because they wanted to prove that they were strong and could defeat other countries. It was particularly important to them to defeat China because they had power. Tens of millions of people took flight. Between 20 million and 30 million soldiers and civilians died during the war.

Japanese General Matsui Iware didn’t approve of the spirit of Chinese resistance so he ordered that the city of Nanking to be destroyed. The Japanese butchered about 150.000 male “war prisoners,” massacred 50.000 male civilians, and raped 20,000 women (girls of all ages). These women were disfigured during this.

    Blitzkrieg means “lightning war”. It was an innovative military technique first used by the Germans in World War Two and was a tactic based on speed and surprise. Blitzkrieg relied on a military force be based around light tank units supported by planes and infantry (foot soldiers). The tactic was based on Alfred von Schlieffen’s ‘Schlieffen Plan’ – this was a doctrine formed during WWI that focused on quick miliatry victory. It was later developed in Germany by an army officer called Guden.

Three army groups that had over 3 million German soldiers, 150 divisions and three thousand tanks that were smashed across the frontier into soviet territory. Barbosa was the turning point in World War 2. The failure of it forced Nazi Germany to fight in a two front war against coalition holding immensely superior recourses.
