Everett Shinn is born
Everett Shinn was an artist and a playwright who was born in New Jersey. Though Shinn usually depicted scenes from the theatre, he also depicts the dreary aspects of life using the style of urban realism he was taught by his friend, John Sloan. He moved to New York to stay a newspaper and magazine illustrator, later developing his talents to portray more scenes of the theatre in a different style after traveling to England and France -

Samuel Margolies is born
Samuel Margolies was born in Brooklyn, New York and became an artist, writer and a teacher. Best known for his work in New York skyscraper and the people who built them, he exhibited his works in the 1939 New York World's Fair, Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Library of Congress. Margolies was a part of Society of American Etchers, American Artist's Congress, and American Veterans Society of the Arts. -

Jolan Gross Bettelheim is born
She is said to have been born in Czecholovakia or Hungary. She moved to Cleveland, Ohio with her husband and submitted her art to annual contests and won. She worked in New York with mostly lithograph, which showed industrial subjects with little political overtones despite being a staunch Communist. When her husband died, she left the U.S. to Hungary in 1956 due to the anti-Communist atmosphere of McCarthyism. Her pro-Communist views isolated her in her own country. -
