John Wesley
John Wesley (1703-1791) was the founder of Methodism. The movement took place during much of the 18th century when a group of men sought to reform the Church of England from within. -
Thomas Newcomen
Newcomen (1664-1729) invented the first steam engine in 1712.It was commonly called the Newcomen Engine and was a precursor to the Watt Steam Engine. -
Nicolas LeBlanc
LeBlanc (1742-1806) is credited with being able to first derive soda from common salt. His dicovery was key to making soap, glass and other products from soda ash. -
James Watt
Watt (1736-1819) built off of Newcomen and invented the Watt Steam Engine. It was a form of pump used to remove water from mines. -
James Hargreaves
Hargreaves (1720-1778) was one of three inventors credited with mechanizing spinning. He invented the spinning jenny which allowed the operator to now spin eight threads at once. -
Samuel Crompton
Crompton (1753-1827) invented the spinning mule, which spun textile fibers into yarn. -
Edmund Cartwright
Cartwright (1743-1823) invented the power loom. It's a mechanized loom powered by a line shaft made to make weaving easier. -
Eli Whitney
Whitney (1765-1825) invented the Cotton Gin. It made the process of separating cotton from its seeds easier. -
Alessandro Volta
Volta (1745-1827) invented the electrical battery. His was the first to emit a steady and lasting current for power. -
Robert Fulton
Fulton (1765-1815) invented the commercially successful steamboat. It was called the "North River Steamboat and it ferried passengers from New York to Albany. -
Karl Marx
Marx (1815-1883) is the founder of Marxism; which fought for the self-emancipation of the working class. It wasn't named until 1983. -
Elias Howe
Howe (1819-1867) invented the sewing machine, which was used for fixing clothes in the factories.
