Gold was discovered in Ballarat, Victoria, starting the Australian gold-rush. It ended in the late 1860's. -

The Brooklyn Bridge construction was completed, which was a major feat of engineering. -

The Eiffel Tower opened to the public as part of the World Fair. It was supposed to be a temporary exhibition but is still standing today. -

Titanic Sinking
The Titanic sinks, leading to a complete review of safety on ships world over, including lifeboat numbers. It also lead to a review of how ships were built to ensure safety. -
WWI Begins
WWI begins, started by the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, after which Hungary declared war on Serbia. -
WWI Ends
WWI ends with the formal surrender of Germany. The war lasted 3 and a half years more than originally projected and there were over 17 million causaulties world wide.
