  • Gandhi joins the INC

    Gandhi joins the Indian National Congress. He completely reorganized the group and made it less elitist. Furthermore, he made Satyagraha the main message of the Congress.
  • Noncooperation Movement

    Noncooperation Movement ( Satyagraha) strengthened by Gandhi along with Nehru to protest British raj ( rule).
  • Jawaharlal Nehru new President of the INC

    Jawaharlal Nehru new President of the INC
    Nehru becomes the new president of the political gorup INC due to the support by his friend Mohandas Gandhi. The following year, Nehru will be arrested in 1930 but continue to create a socialist political platform for the group.
  • The Salt March

    The Salt March
    After his release from prison, Gandhi once again promoted Satyagraha that sought to elimate the British heavy tax on salt. This tax, in particular, did great harm to the poverty rate of Indians. This led to the Salt March, an great act of civil disobedience that occured in 1930 as well. Gandhi led his supporters to the sea where he picked up a pinch of salt. Thousands of his supporters followed his actions. The British then arrested Gandhi and other members of the Indian National Congress

    Gandhi resigned from the Indian National Congress yet continued to encourage the Indian people to live simply, reject manufactured goods and develop their own handicrafts. He led by example as he lived this simple lifestyle as well.
  • Quit India Movement

    During World War II, Gandhi demanded British withdraw from India. The Quit India Movement had begun, and the Indian National Congress refused to support the British in World War II unless they guaranteed complete Indian independence after the war. Later in 1942 Gandhi and the whole INC are arrested.

    India's Independence Britain granted independence to the Indian Empire, partitioning it into Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan. Islamic nationalist leader Mohammed Ali Jinnah became the governor-general of Pakistan, and Indian nationalist leader Jawaharlal Nehru became prime minister of India, with Earl of Burma Louis Mountbatten as governor-general.
