Charley to want to get out of the house and play the sport he was most interested in. This sport was basketball.

Phil was in love with the game of basketball.. He was playing in a NCAA small college tournament when Red Holzman approached him and told him he loved how Phil played. Red was the coach that most influenced Phil to make a vision of his pro game. Phil did everything that Red had suggested and got selected by the Knicks in the 1967 NBA draft.

In June that year he had missed the game and the Knicks had an opening for a coaching spot so he had been interviewed for the job but unfortunately did not get the job so he returned back to Woodstock.

Phil had to make a tough decision with Kobe about where to put him in the game. At practices Kobe wasn't showing his full potential and Phil knew it. Phil had talk with Kobe and Kobe didn't want to play anymore. Phil had convinced him to play by telling him he could end up being the best player in the league and so he was.
