Phil was in love with the game of basketball.. He was playing in a NCAA small college tournament when Red Holzman approached him and told him he loved how Phil played. Red was the coach that most influenced Phil to make a vision of his pro game. Phil did everything that Red had suggested and got selected by the Knicks in the 1967 NBA draft.

Phil had talk with Kobe and Kobe didn't want to play anymore. Phil had convinced him to play by telling him he could end up being the best player in the league and so he was.
