Important Events in Special Ed History

  • First Special Education School

    First Special Education School
    Originally named, "American Asylum for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb", it is now known as "The American School for the Deaf". Before this school came about, there was little to no formal education for deaf and/or dumb students in the US.

  • Florida School for the Deaf and Blind established

    Florida School for the Deaf and Blind established
    The Florida School for the Deaf and Blind was established with the help of private contributions and with support from the state of Florida. It is a school for Pre-K and K-12 students. This school also serves members of the community in many other ways. This is a tuition free school still located in St Augustine.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Brown vs Board of Education
    In this case, the US Supreme Court found that having separate facilities was "inherently unequal". This ruling laid a firm foundation for the 1975 IDEA, which "requires free access to a free appropriate public education for all children with disabilities". This is now seen as incredibly important in prohibiting segregatoin on basis of disability.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children

    Education for All Handicapped Children
    This act, which was signed in 1975 by President Ford, was meant to support states and local governments in both protecting the rights of and meeting the needs of disabled youths and their families. At this time, only 1 in 5 children with disabilities were being educated. Since the passing of this act, major progress has been made.
  • Regular Education Initiative

    Regular Education Initiative
    Inclusion was put into practice by placing students with disabilities into regular education classrooms. This was introduced by Assistant Secretary of Education, Madeleine C. Will. She put pressure on educators to take more responsibility special needs students education.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in many areas. This means that now people with disabilities could not be denied access to education or transportation. This applies to anyone who has a physical or mental impairment.
  • IDEA amended

    IDEA amended
    reauthorized and amended to require inclusion of the inclusion of students with disabilities in statewide and districtwide assessments, measurable IEP goals and objectives, and functional behavioral assessment and behavior intervention plans for students with emotional or behavioral needs.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    “to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging State academic achievement standards and state academic assessments."

    The Higher Education Opportunity Act
    U.S. Department of Education
    This was passed to help to provide opportunities for grants and Federal work-study programs. This gives the Secretary of Education the right to get rid of certain sections of the law that might keep students with disabilities from attending the post-secondary school of their choice. This could be in degree or non-degree seeking programs, or in a trade school.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act

    Every Student Succeeds Act
    Signed by President Obama, it builds on already in place key areas of progress. This progress was made possible by educators, parents, and students. The goal of this is to completely prepare students for success in college and careers.
