Dog that detects cancer
Dogs do as well as state-of-the-art screening tests at sniffing out people with lung or breast cancer. The research raises the possibility that trained dogs could detect cancers even earlier and might some day supplement or even replace mammograms and CT scans in the laboratory.http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn8549-xd-dogs-as-good-as-screening-for-cancer-detection.html -
Brachytherapy development
U.T.’s Health Science Centre unveiled a new promising cancer treatment that revolutionized the way to treat cancerous tumors in patients’ lungs. This new finding is called Brachytherapy, a new cancer treatment without surgery. http://www.treatgene.com/top-10-discoveries-of-cancer-treatment-in-2009/ -
Suicide Gene developed
A group of researchers from National Cancer Institute (NCI) have used the suicide genes that cause a cell to kill itself through apoptosis to treat cancer. This new technique used the surviving gene promoter to induce the expression of suicide gene in cancer cells with a minimum effect on normal cells. http://www.treatgene.com/top-10-discoveries-of-cancer-treatment-in-2009/ -

Breakthrough against leukemia
The drug Gleevec can keep chronic myelogenous leukemia, or CML, at bay for as long as the patient takes the drug. However, leukemia stem cells lurk in the patient’s marrow waiting to develop into cancer. Gleevec has no effect on these stem cells. And while leukemia stem cells lie in wait, they can become resistant to Gleevec. When they grow into adult cells, the patient develops leukemia again.http://www.cityofhope.org/about/facts-and-figures/Pages/recent-research-breakthroughs.aspx -
