Imperialism in Africa

    Slavery

    The Europeans sailed south around Africa, trying to get rich on silks and spices in India and China. In doing so they started trading with the African people.
  • 1500

    Slave Trade

    The Europeans started to sell African guns and sell slaves too. The slaves went for a lot off money. The slaves were then taken over the Atlantic Ocean, and to the Americas were the would then work in the fields. 13 million people were soled and forced to go to the Americas. 20% of the slaves dies on the way to America.
  • Colonization

    in the 1500s into the early 1800s the Europeans were colonizing Africa for the natural resources that it holds. The Europeans wanted to control Africa that had great trade routes and even better natural resources. So, Britain started to take over Suez Canal in Egypt.
  • Colonization of Others

    Europe had most of Africa. The only uncolonized country was Ethiopia.
  • European Colonization

    All colonization is bad, the worst for Africa was the Belgium Congo. The Europeans banned slaver, and built schools, roads and railroads, and more. The Europeans colonization deviated Africa in many ways.
  • South Africa independence

    South Africa in 1910 was granted indolence from the British. Even though there was a small group of white people they still ran the government and businesses.
  • Kikuyu

    In the 1920s the Kikuyu people in Kenya started an political organization to fight for freedom from the British. It took years but Kenya finally earned its independence in 1963.

    In 1930 Italy colonized Ethiopia.
  • Rebeling

    Kwame Nkrumah had the idea of Pan-Africaism, which is the belief of all Black Africans every were. Ghana would get its independence it 1957. The Pan-Afeicaism inspired Jomo Kenyatta and Nnamdi Azikiwe to get freedom.
  • Apartheid Law

    In 1948 the White Africans made the apartheid law. It is a law based on race. Under the apartheid law the black Africans had to live and work where the whites wanted them to. Blacks could not marry whites, and they had bad schooling and health care. They also had no say in ht government.
  • Steve Biko

    One member of the ANC Steve Biko was prisoned and murdered by the police. The murder of Biko drew attention to famous singer, the singers started to protest. Biko's story was made famous by song writer Peter Gabriel.
  • Sudan's Independence

    Sudan gained its Independence in 1956. In the northern part of Sudan is manly Muslim Arabs. In the southern part the people not manly Arabs. Along with the other, religions most of them practiced Christianity. But the country government was in the northern part.

  • Rwanda's Independence

    In 1962 Rwanda got its independence, after that Rwanda broke out in violence. The Hutu took control. The country was in violence till 1994.

    In 1963 after a long time Kenya got its independence.
  • Nelson Mandela

    Mandela was is the best Known leader of the African National Congress. In 1964 Mandela ways sentence to life in jail for his actions. Mandela would not be quiet, and still would protest.
  • Belgium Congo's Independence

    The Belgium Congo finally got its independence in 1960. The country then struggled create a fair and stable government. In result Joseph Mobutu gained power and renamed the country Zaire and ruled with no problem for 32 years, But there was still pain because of his violent ways.
  • Nigeria's Suffering

    Nigeria suffered from its loads of ethnic groups. The year of 1976 the Igbo people tried to make themselves independent, they did and named their country Biafra. When the Igbo people did this it started a civil war, and over one million people died. This was before they agreed to remain apart of Nigeria.
  • F.E. w Klerk

    Klerk was elected president of South Africa. he realized that apartheid could not go on so he put a stop to it.
  • Mandela's Freedom from Prison

    In 1990 Klerk released Mandela from prison.
  • Noble Peace Prize

    In 1993, Mandela and Klerk got a Noble Peace Prize for what they have done.
  • New President

    South Africa its first open elections and elected Mandela as their new president.
  • Sudans War

    After Sudan's independence the south rebelled against the northern side. Which caused two civil wars. One from 1956 to 1972, and the other from 1983 to 2005. Millions of people died.
  • Arab Springs

    In 2010 the Tunisia people began to agitate more for a democratic government. This movement is know to be the Arab Springs. To get the word around the protesters used social media to spears the word about a corrupt government.
  • South Sudan

    In 2011 South Sudan finally got its independence.
  • Rwanda President

    In 2011 Ben Ali the President resigned, and so there was a democratic government elected. Similar things happened in Algeria and Morocco.
  • Muammar Qaddafi

    In Libya, a dictator of the name Muammar Qaddafi refused to step down. So war broke out. Other state plus the United States helped the rebels. Qaddafi was captured and killed in 2011.
  • Egypt's Leader

    When the Arab Spring started Egypt was under the leader Hosni Mubarak. Mubarak was a dictator who was the leader of Egypt for 30 years. He was forced to resign in 2011.
  • Mohammed Morsi

    In 2012 Mubarak was replaced by Mohammed Morsi. Morsi's term was sort because in 2013, he was over thrown by the military. They then gave the military more power over the country.
