Two men named Wiliam Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer were newspaper writers. They wrote stories for the paper, but they exaggerated them to deepen American sympathy for the rebels. This was called yellow journalism. -
DeLome letter
A private letter that the New York Journal published. It was written by Enrique Dupuy de Lome, the Spanish minister of the United States. A Cuban rebel stole it from the Havana post office and put it in the newspaper for scandal. -
USS Maine
President McKinley ordered the USS Maine to bring home American citizens that were in danger from the fighting and to protect American property. The ship blew up in the harbor of Havana. More than 260 men were killed. -
