    Congress, through Seward, purchased Alaska in 1867 for $7.2 million. Also. William H. Seward led the drive to to annex Midway Island and gained the rights to build a canal in Nicaragua.
  • The Placement of Missionaries Around The World

    Reverend Josiah Strong stated that the Anglo-Saxon people were “the fittest to survive”. The Protestant Americans supposedly had a duty to colonize foreign lands and spread the benefits out their society such as medicine, science, and technologies. Missionaries were pleaded in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. The spread of missionaries around the world helped spread the influence of America.
  • Naval Power

    In the book The Influence of Sea Power Upon History by the U.S. Navy Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan, it is stated that a strong navy was crucial to a country’s ambitions of securing foreign markets and becoming a world power. Congress financed the construction of steel ships and encouraged the acquisition of islands such as Samoa.
  • Cleveland, Olney, and the Monroe Doctrine

    During a boundary dispute between Venezuela and the British colony of Guiana President Cleveland and Secretary of State Richard Olney insisted that Great Britain disengage the conflict. This protected the Latin American nations from European domination. This kept Britain from expanding and cultivated a friendship between Britain and the U.S.
  • Annexation if Hawaii

    American settlers overthrew the Hawaiian monarch and blocked Republican efforts to annex Hawaii. The Hawaiian islands became a territory of the United States In 1900 and in 1959 it became the 50th state in the union.
  • Treaty of Peace

    The treaty of peace provided for the recognition of Cuban independence, U.S. acquisition of Puerto Rico and Guam, and U.S. acquisition of the Philippines in return for payment to Spain of $20 million.
  • The Panama Canal

    The United States wanted a Canal to connect the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The canal was started in 1904 and was completed in 1914. It allowed sailers shipping goods to save time and money.
