Hi, my name is Gabriella Florence. I’m from Italy and left because of dry land, the rocky soil, terrible weather- hot, long, dry summers, hardly any rainfall, It was hard on the workers because the hot sun blazed at their backs
, and Natural disasters that threatened the crops- volcanoes erupting, landslides, earthquakes, tidal waves, etc. Also there are more jobs in America if I don’t get the land that I want. -

The Boat Ride
To get to America you have to take a boat. This makes it so I have to pay for the boat ride and somehow get on it. -
Check -in and Inspections
Getting on the boat was a very long journey. There were many check-in stations and lots of inspection places. This was very difficult and I had to make myself look the best I could. -
The Arrival
Arriving in America was very hard. Many people were “welcoming” but they just wanted me to buy things. They were very pushy and aggressive. -
Wanting Land and Working in the City
Much better weather conditions with a whole variety of temperatures. There aren’t as many natural disasters
Better pay for the workers
The land and soil was better (but it depends on where I get the land) Better machinery to help the crops and the workers. Big acres of land to do farming on. If I don’t get the land, I don’t know what I will do. -
The Homestead Act of 1862
The homestead act of 1862 allows immigrants/people to get land for little or no cost. -
My Jelwery is Stolen
I got all of my jewelry so I could sell it and use that money for the land. When I was walking down the street one day someone stole it from me. I was not as welcomed as I thought I’d be. -
Working in the City
I got a job working in the city to gather money since my money got stolen. Hopefully I will get enough money to get my land. -
Land at Last
I finally went to work and tried my hardest to get land. Finally I got the news that I won 5 acres of land. This would be perfect to put animals, crops, and machinery in! -
Land, Work, and Freedom
I am pretty happy now. This was a long journey but I’m glad and did it and it’s done.
