Arriving at Ellis Island
Today I arrived at Ellis Island. I am so excited to start a new life here in America. When I arrived I saw many people with very excited faces. I also saw that there were vey long lines to get examined by the doctors. This person in front of me got detained for having a contagious disease. I later found out that he had to be sent back to his homeland. The examination only lasted a few minutes before we headed up to the great hall. In the Great hall I had to exchange my German euros into US doll -
Second Day on Ellis Island
Today is the second day of being on Ellis Island. Last night I slept in a cot in the Great Hall. I had a hard time falling asleep. And I kept thinking about what was going to happen to me in the USA. I was told that I had to answer some questions before I could get of Ellis Island. They asked me what job I was going to try to get. I told them that I wanted to be a miner. -
Getting a Job
I am very excited because today I got my first job as a miner. Even though the job has very long work hours I get paid 5$ an hour. My coworkers and I got along very well. I like my boss he treats me pretty well. I also think that I am falling in love with the bosses daughter Victoria. I'm afraid of asking her out because what if my boss doesn’t want me to go out with his daughter. But I hope that I will muster up enough courage to ask her out. -
I am Getting Married
Today I am marrying Victoria. The boss, my best friend Rudolf Wagner, and all my coworkers were there. It was a beautiful sight to see my wife coming down the lane. She was wearing a beautiful white gown. My boss gave me a pay raise so that I would have enough money to buy Victoria a ring. I also bought a new house with the money I get from the raise. We will move into the house after we take a month long visit to Germany for our Honeymoon. -
Going on Strike
Today there was an explosion at the mine. While we were mining the coal a spark lit the coal and the pressure made a huge explosion. I nearly got killed but I got a way with a few minor injuries. My friend however did not survive. Me and a couple other workers are going on strike against my boss. We are striking for better equipment and more money. We are very hopeful that my boss will teat us better. -
Getting Fired
Today my boss fired me and my coworkers who were striking. He then hired some Chinese immigrants. Victoria and I could not stand living in Virginia with him any more. So we moved to Pittsburgh. I found a job in a steel factory. One of my coworkers was hitting on my wife so I threw him in a vat of steel. But unfortunately I fell in as well.
