Moving to America
My name is Amelia Olivera, I am from Portugal.
I have decided to move to America, I bought the ticket so I may leave today. I have decided to move to America because my mother is very ill, and I must go to run the buisiness with my younger sister. I am 18 years old, and my sister is 11, she can not take care of my mother herself. -
An outbrake of yellow fever killed my mother.
My mother has been put out of her misery, My mother had yellow fever from the outbrake in Boston, where my family moved to after coming from Portugal. She will be greatly missed, not just by me, or my sister, but everyone who knew her, because she was an amazing person. -
Meeting the Missionaries
My sister and I have started going to church, to pray for my mothers rested soul. The missionaries are very friendly, and they have daughters and sons that my sister can play with. I am strongly considering moving out west with them. -
Western Movement
Today, we are starting the process to move West. We are going to settle in Oregon, because of the Homestead Act, they are giving free land! Amazing isn't it! There is a single missionary that hs caught my eye, his name is Christopher. He is a gentlemen, for the past months he has been helping my sister and I get by. I appreciate him, and everything the missionaries have done for me. Finally, we are going somewhere I can call my home. -
The Harsh Winter
After travelling to Oregon, we expeirienced one of the worst winters I have ever seen or heard of. I am now married to Christopher, and we had a son. During this time, nobody could go outside, it rained and snowed all day, and sickness broke out. My son was one of the unfortunate to get a sickness the doctor called, chicken pox. Many children have gotton it, and have died already, and my son is one of the many to get taken by the sickness. This winter is by far the worst, for the town, and I. -
Heat Wave
After the harsh winter comes a heat wave. Nothing is to eat, and nothing is to be grown either. Everyone is hot, and water is scarce. I respect my choice to come here, but sometimes I feel it has its difficulties. After the loss of my son, I have decided to become a teacher at a missionary school. Christopher is the towns doctor. Hopefully August will help our community better themselves, I cannot stand to see everything like this, so dehydrated and dead. It reminds me of bad times in Portugal.
