Potato Famine
In Ireland the potato famine was beginning. So I decided to move west. On the way to the dock a rich landowner was slepping on a bench. I walked over and rummaged through his clothes. He had all his money on him. As I walked to the boat he woke up. He saw me and chased me to the boat. I quickly bought a 1st class ticket and the guards luckly stopped him. I was on my way to America. -
Life in America
I walked off the ship and what I saw was the least of what I expected. There were people of every kind everywhere. The streets were crowded and there was so much yelling. I guy walked up to me and told me to follow him. He led me to a overcrowded house he called a tenement and told me i could stay here as long as I worked for him. I said yes and i started the job right away. I got paid a dollar a week and he charged me 3/4 a dollar to stay at the tenement. I assumed it was worth it so I stayed. -
Fighting
I was walking home from work one fine evening when a guy pointed a gun to my head. It was the landlord that I took the money from. I gave him a punch to the gut and he doubbled over. Then as he hit the ground he pulled the trigger and put a bullet right through my arm. I ran away screaming. When I got the the tenement they took my money and made me leave. -
Railroad
I barely survived the winter. I had to break into houses and steal food, and money. I only had the trees for warmth and the dirt for a bed. Finally I made my way to a railroad station. A guy was asking people to help build the railroad. I told him I would and I got the job. I would get paid 1dollar a week and get free land whe we got to the west. -
Pioneers
As we were working on the railroad we saw groups of pioneers pass us. Everyone said they thought they could just show up and get some free land. After a couple of days I decided that I was going to get there as soon as possible. I left the railroad workers and joined the pioneers. We set off towards the west in hope of free land. -
Free Land (continued)
I walked into the town and it was very quit and misirible. There was an extreamly old couple staring out towards the open feild. I walked over to them and they looked at me. The old man started talking to me. I just tunned him out untill he said do you want it or not. I looked at him and wondered what he was talking about. He just rolled his eyes and told me I could have his land. As I hopped on my horse to go get the land. Then, there was a loud gunshot and everything went black. -
Free Land
When the pioneers and I got to the west people were shouting and cheering about a race. I talked with the pioneers and they told me you had to race for the land. I bought a horse and sattle and rested for the night. In the morning everyone was linning up. They shot the pistol and everyone was off. about 1/2 an hour later there were only a couple of places left. The moon started to rise so i started going back. when I got back there was about 1/4 of the people who still didn't have land.
