    Christohpher Columbus goes to the queen of Sapin (Isabella) and asks her for money to try and find a better rounte to India. She allows this to happen and gives him the money he needs. Then on accident, he lands in Canada and finds North America.

    Mexico was just newly discovered when Hernan Cortes was allowed to lead a small expedition to explore. The Governor actually changed his mind and cancelled the expedition, but Cortes went anyway on February 18th.

    The Dutch came to America for many of the same reasons as other countries did. Some Dutch citizens came looking for a new home and beginning. And some came to take advantage of new trade opportunities that the new world offered them.

    Spanish Exploration

    The Spanish immigrants came to America to find a shorter distance from Spain to India, such as Christopher Columbus. Others came to find for "Cities of Gold" such as Hernán Cortez & Francisco Pizarro. Others came as a missionary mission to convert Native Americans to Christianity such as Serra Junipero. Most of these explorers would also claim the land they found to be property of the Spanish crown.

    British immigrants came to America for many reasons, but most were seeking an opportunity for a better life than they had at home. Very early in the history of Colonial American, some groups of immigrants came seeking religious liberty, or the opportunity to establish their own religious orthodoxy, separate from that of the Church of England, and to persecute those who did not conform to their views, just as they had been persecuted nonconformists in England.

    On June 30, 1619 determines that only colonist of English descent are given the right to vote. As a result the Polish settlers organize what becomes the first labor strike in American history. Their slogan was " No Vote, No Work". As a result, voting rights were granted to Polish settlers.

  • The Great Potato Famine in Ireland

    In 1845 there was a potato famine in Ireland. Ireland continued to suffer de-population after the famine ended. Many young Irish families saw their futures in America and not Ireland. This affected Ireland as those who were most active and who could contribute the most to Ireland, left the country. this led people to immagrate to America.
  • Gold Rush

    Between 1820 and 1860, only about 14,000 Italians immigrated to the United States, most coming as individuals from northern Italy, seeking economic opportunity. Some were attracted to the West Coast with the California gold rush of 1849.
  • Prussian War

    The Germans and the Italians were in a war fron 1852 to 1870. Because Prince Otto Edward Leopold von Bismarck wanted Germany uner Prussian control. Because of destruction to Germany, Germans started migrating to America.

    In Hawaii the sugar industry was in business, and this encouraged Japanese to move to Hawaii because in Japan they were shifting to a modern day economy. Alot of the Japanese were unemployed and going bankrupt.

    1908 - Japan and the U.S. agree (Gentlemen's Agreement) to halt the migration of Japanese laborers in the United States. Japanese women are allowed to immigrate if they are wives of U.S. residents. If They are not wives of U.S residents , then they you would have to be deported.

    World War I (WWI) was a global war centred in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. Many immigrants without ties to Germany fought bravely in WW1. African Americans did not have a formidable fighting group in the war. Women suffered alone at home mostly living with family groups while their men died in battle having to pick up their lives and move on.

    Most Italians came to America because of high taxes, therefor most of them went to Pennsylvania in order to get rich. However, most Italians didn't plan on staying long.

    The National Socialist Germans Workers Party (Nazis) attempt a rebellion led by Adolf Hitler. Adolf Hitler led his rebellion against the country of Germany, many people died but some immigrated to New York.

  • Problems faced in America

Within these tight knit communities, Italian-Americans formed a variety of organizations and associations to cater to their cultural and domestic needs.
