Immigrating From Africa to America

  • Birth

I was born in a small hut in a remote village in africa. My mother died during the birth. My father left long ago with 2 of my other siblings. I was then raised by my 10 year old brother.
  • Have To Get a Job.

Today i am turning 12. My brother who is now 20 says it is time for me to get a job because now i am legal for one. He cannot care for me any longer and has to get on with his life. He will be taking me to a few places far away from our remote village, and looking for a place that will also take me in.
  • Found a Job.

The place that accepted me will be providing food & shelter in exchange for my work. I'm not too excited, all i will be doing for the next 6 years is picking rice other things. My brother has said his farewells & i am not to ever see him again now. Hopefully things go well here and it wont be too boring.
  • Kicked Out

At the place where i have been working for the past 6 years, when you are 18 you must leave but they give you 3 months to find something to do. It's been 3 months today and they are now kicking me out. They liked me a lot though & suggest i go to America. New york, specifically, because i have a good work ethic.
  • Arrived!

I safely arrived here to america. It was such a relief to pass the immigration inspection at Ellis Island! It'll be quite hard to learn english but i have to learn it no matter what. I'm really not even sure what to do. I really do wish my brother knew where i was. I'm going to go try to find a job for myself now!
  • Things Are Going Well.

I remember just arriving about 2 years ago and wondering how i was going to ever find a job but i did! I work on skyscrapers. Yes, it is very dangerous & life risking but i get good pay. I get such a good pay that i am able to own my own apartment! I also love living in the city. It's amazing seeing how rapidly america is growing!
