Who I am
Hello my name is Kuba Bernaccki, I was born and raised on my father’s farm in Podkarpacie, Poland. Podkarpacie is located in southeast Poland; it is one of the poor regions. -
Reasons for immigrating
I want to go to America because my crops have been dying, and I have no money to support my family. It has been rumored that there is free land in America where I can start farming again. -
Struggles in America
I have made it to America, although my brother would not come with me, he didn’t want to leave our homeland. But, now that I am in America I still don’t have a place to sleep and no job. -
Finding a job
I had been asking around but, I still don’t know where the free land is but, someone did tell me about the railroads and that they are offering jobs for immigrants. -
Working on the railroads
I had a job working on the railroads, although it is tough work it is the only thing keeping me alive. Also a man I think his name was john told me where the free land was, and that I had to race for it. -
Journey to the West
I purchased a horse and went to the West, I followed a group of immigrants that also wanted the land but, after we got there we went our separate ways. -
Getting my land
When they fired that gun that signaled the start of the race, I went as fast as I could. I found a piece of land that took to my liking but, someone had already claimed it. I raced on and finally found a plain that wasn’t already taken, I took the land and thought how I had done it.
