    Elie is Moved to the Cattle Cars
    Time in the cattle cars was tough on Elie because of his hunger, the heat, stench, and lacking of privacy in them. It was the end of his adolescence.
    The event had a negative and positive impact on him since now his mindset has changed since he is no longer a processing child and is now an adult. The negative impact was that he now understood the dangers of the situation.
    It connects to the them since he now starts to start questioning why these horrible things are happening to him.
  • Elie begins to question God

    Elie begins to question God
    Elie questions on why God would let these horrible acts be commited on innocents. He says things like, "Why didn't God intervene to save his "Chosen People"?"
    This event had a negative impact on him since he was originally a very religous child but now since he is an adult he begins to think and questions God. It changes his beliefs since he accuses God of silence.
    It related to the theme statement since he starts to lose his faith in dark times, but he stills clings onto hope.

    Shlomo Wiesel (his father) dies
    Elie was 16 when his father died of fever. Elies father was the one who kept Elie going and was there to help him at all times.
    This event had a negative impact since his father was the one who guided him through camps and helped save his life on many occasions. With his father gone Elie lost most of his hope and energy.
    This relates back to the them statement since Elie starts to lose hope and loses all of his energy.

    Elie contracts food poisoning and is depressed
    Elie gets food poisoning from the very little of potato peelings and grass he ate. He said he looked like a corpse and said he would never be happy again.
    This had a negative effect on him since he had nothings and was never going to be happy again.

    This relates back to the theme statement since at this point he lost everthing, his hope, his faith, his happiness, and his family. HE no longer has faith in these dark times.

    Elie is liberated and sent to France
    When Elie was liberated he found a list of survivors and was very sad to see none of his sisters or his mother were on it. Belgium initially invited 400 children, but then they were sent to France to a boarding school.
    This was a turning point in elie's life since originally in the camps he was willing to kill himself just so he can be free. Now that he is really free from the camps.
    It relates back to the theme statement since now he begins to regain his hope and no longer is in a dark spot
  • Elie teens years come near to an end

    Elie teens years come near to an end
    After his liberation he enrolled at the Sorbonne were he was quite happy. He still had thoughts of committing suicide for long periods of time.
    This had a positive imapct on him since he now is finally happy after the horrible events at the camps. But it still had a small negative impact since he still had dark thoughts and memories of the camps.
    This relates to the theme statement since even after all that time int he still had hope and started to become happy again.
