First compound microscope
Hans and Zacharias Jansen invented the first compound microscope. -
Hooke's cork
Robert Hooke observed a cork through a microscope and he noticed pores that he believed contained fibers of the tree when it was alive. He was the first one to use the word cell. -
Flies and meat
Francisco Redi experimented with rotting meat to see if it would turn into flies, but found out that it was not possible. It disproved the spontaneous generation. -
Bacteria
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, The father of microbiology, used his new design of a microscope to research unicellular Organisms and sketched them for the first time. He observed blood cells and described the cell nucleus, and more importantly the firs bacteria, which he called animalcules. -
Life in soup
John Needham realized that when soup was exposed to air, it contained microorganisms. Due to this, he theorized that there was life in inorganic matter like air. He intended to prove the spontaneous generation theory. -
Binary fission
Abraham Trembley figured out a way to keep bacteria alive and observe them through a microscope, and for the first time he observed their reproduction through binary fission. -
Cell nucleus
While studying fertilization, Robert brown found orchid pollen travels between cells from ovals within the cell, which he called the nucleus. -
1st principles
Both Schwann and Schleiden observed that the cell made up living thing´s structure, thus they stated for the first time that all organisms are composed of one or more cells. Cells are the basic unit of life. -
Cells in plats
Matthias Schleiden discovered through observation that all plants are made of cells, wich he shared with Theodor Schwann -
Cells in animals.
Theodore Schwann observed that all animals are made of cells, and started communicating with Schleiden about plants and animals -
3rd principle
Rudolph Virchow stated that all cells come from pre-existing cells which have divided. It later became one of the principles of the cell theory.
