    ASPCA IS UNDERWAY
    Henry Bergh founds the ASPCA on April 10, 1866. The ASPCA is the country's first humane organization created, and also prompts the New York State legislature to pass the country's first (effective) anti-cruelty law.

  • First Animal Ambulance

    First Animal Ambulance
    The ASPCA were the first to create an ambulance for injured animals, particularly horses, in New York City. Surprisingly, this was two years prior to the first ambulance created for humans.
  • First Veterinary Facility

    The ASPCA opened its first veterinary facility in 1912 providing hands-on critical care to tens of thousands of injured and abused animals.
  • Operating Tables

    The ASPCA begins implementing the first rotating operating table for horses, designed for the University of Pennsilvania.
  • No More Testing

    No More Testing
    In New York, the ASPCA inaugurates inspections of laboratory animals used in research.
  • Poison Control

    Poison Control
    The ASPCA creates the NAPCC (National Animal Poison Control Center) in 1996. This is the only veterinary toxicology telephone service in the United States operating 24 hours a day, 356 days a year.
  • Disaster Relief

    Disaster Relief
    The ASPCA Disaster Relief Fund was established after the attacks on September 11, 2001. This fund receives an abundant amount of support from ASPCA members after Hurricane Katina and Rita. During hurricane Katrina, the ASPCA was able to rescue, reunite, and rehome more than 8,000 animals. They were also able to fundraise more than $13 million from supporters.
  • Domestic Abuse

    Domestic Abuse
    ASPCA plays a big role in passing numerous measures to help protect animals. HB 2001 now permits the courts to include pets in protective orders in domestic abuse cases. Too often victims of domestic abuse remain in dangerous situations to protect their pets.
  • 5,000th Grant

    5,000th Grant
    Since 2008, the ASPCA Grants Department has become a key player in animal welfare philanthropy, helping fund animal welfare programs in every state. To date, the ASPCA has made nearly $55 million in grants!On April 4, 2013, the ASPCA made its 5,000th grant, awarding $31,500 to BCHS (Bradford County Humane Society).
