History of Special/ Inclusive Education

  • Brown v. Board of Education

    The final ruling of "Brown v. Board of education" case was that all students were to be treated equal. This meant the it didn't matter what color you were all students had the right to a fair education. Colored people no longer had to have separate placed to learn since it was unfair and not right. This ruling favored the Browns and allowed there to be schools that allowed all raced instead of having separate ones.
  • The Dept. of Public Welfare v. Haas

    In this case they rules that the schools in Illinois didn't have to offer a "free" education to the mental indecent students. Due to the mental problems that they students faced they didn't have the same advantage as the student that didn't have the mental problems.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)

    This act helped children and families that were poor be able to provide there students with a fair chance of getting a good education. This allows them to ave equal access to schooling as a child and provided them the chance to also go to college if they wanted to.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children

    This Act ensured that all handicapped children received an education despite their disabilities.
  • Board of Edu. of Hendrick Central School District v. Rowley

    This helped clarify what it meant to have a free and appropriate public education. Due to Rowley being deaf the court ruled that the school systems had to provide sufficient services and and support to the students with disables so that they have the same advantages as the students without disabilities.
  • Going v. Doe

    This case helps students that have behavioral and emotional problems. This makes sure that even though they have these problems they are still able to receive a education and wouldn't be expelled based off their disability.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

    This Act ensured that all students recieve a free and appropriate public education. It also allows the individual to have their education tailored to their needs so that they have the best possible advantage of succeeding in education.

  • IDEA Reauthorization

    They reauthorized the IDEA in order to help students that may not yet have a disability but need additional support in order to succeed in a General Education Environment.
  • Winkelman v. Parma City School District

    This gave parent the right to act for thier children by allowing them to presume IDEA claims so that their child's rights are being met.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

    This Act was signed by Brock Obama which allowed all student to have equal opportunity when it came to their education. This Act ended up replacing the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) that was established in 2002.
