    The First Special Education School
    The first Special Education school was established in Hartford, CT. This school still exists, and is called The American School for the Deaf.
  • Compulsory Education Law

    Compulsory Education Law
    Rhode Island passed a law that all children must be educated. Not all states followed this law until 1918.
  • School for the Deaf and Blind

    School for the Deaf and Blind
    The School for the Deaf and The School for the Blind was established in 1870 giving academic and vocational training to students who were deaf and/or blind.
  • The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

    The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
    The AAIDD is the oldest professional association concerned with intellectual and developmental disabilities. AAIDD advocates for the equality, dignity, and human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and for their full inclusion and participation in society.
  • Autism is introduced

    Brown Vs. Board of Education
    Brown Vs. Board of Education declared that "separate but equal" had no place in education. Laws stated that schools to separate black and white students was unconstitutional.
  • Special Education Programs were funded

    Special Education Programs were funded
    In the 1960s, multiple laws were passed, granting funds for special education students. States began establishing Special Education programs in schools.

    PARC Vs. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    On August 12, 1971 the court case Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children (PARC), Vs. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was argued. It was decided that a state could not deny, put off, or end any intellectually disabled student's access to a public education. Link text
