  • American School for the Deaf.

It was founded in Hartford Connecticut; it is the oldest permanent school for the deaf in the United States today. The American School for the Deaf became the first school to receive financial aid from the state.
  • First Public Special Education Class

    First Public Special Education Class
    In 1896 Rhode Island opened the first public Special Education class in the United states. Teachers became aware of students with learning disabilities and that they needed special classes and teachers. By 1923 around 34,000 students were in special education classes. Some schools asked for training from institutions and teachers were trained to teach these students.
  • President Kennedy panel on Mental Retardation

    President Kennedy panel on Mental Retardation
    President John F. Kennedy announced a panel to address individuals living with intellectual disabilities. This was called “Special Message to the Congress on Mental illness and Mental Retardation” this panel gave information like maternal care, prenatal care, and recommendations for not placing these individuals in institutions. It also featured plans for research centers that would diagnose, and provide treatment for training, special education and rehabilitation for these individuals.

    Autism Society was founded in 1965 by Bernard Rimland. He wrote the book Infantile Autism: The Syndrome and its Implications for a Neural Theory of Behavior, In 1964.The Autism Society organization provides parents the best information, research, and support on autism.     The first special Olympics takes place in Chicago in 1968. Ann McGlone Burke was a Physical education teacher that came up with the idea for a competition for people with special needs. More than 1,000 athletes attended from all over the United States and Canada participated the first special Olympics. Now over 2.5 million athletes of all ages participate in the special Olympics and over 180 countries compete.
  • Mills vs. Board of Education

    Mills vs. Board of Education
    The Mills vs. Board of Education was a lawsuit on behalf of seven school age children who had been denied placement in appropriate public education programs because of their mental, behavioral, physical and emotional disabilities. The court decided that no child should be denied education because of these disabilities.
  • Public Law 94-142.

    Public Law 94-142.
    This law required every state to accept money from the government to provide equal education for children with disabilities. Student were also supplied with one free meal per day. Every state was to check that this with put into place in their public schools. This law also extended these services for preschool age children with disabilities ages 3-5.
  • IDEA

    IDEA
    Individuals with Disability Education Act is the reauthorization and renaming of public law 94-142. This law states that education to all children ages 6- 18 who meet eligibility requirements. IDEA also features seven principles:
    -Free Appropriate Education
    -Notification and procedural right for parents
    -Identification and services to all children
    -Necessary related services
    -Individualized assessment
    -Individualized Education plans
    -Least Restrictive Environment
  • The Americans with Disabilities Act

    The Americans with Disabilities Act
    Act was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush. The ADA is one of the most detailed civil rights legislation that prohibits discrimination and ensures that people with disabilities can have the same opportunities as everyone else. A individual can qualify for services under the Americans with Disabilities Act if they have one disability mental or physical impairment that limits life activities or a history of an impairment.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The No Child Left Behind Act was signed on January 8, 2002 it addresses teachers and school personnel’s accountability for student’s achievement and to have expectations for every child to show proficiency in math, reading, and science. Special education teachers should teach disabled students to a comparable level of students in the same class that are not disabled. This would raise the expectations for students with disabilities.
